Artist statement: “THIS GROUP OF WORK REPRESENTS A MAN PRACTICING BLINDNESS. MONOPRINTS, WATERCOLORS, PORTRAITS AND OIL PAINTINGS; THESE ARE THE EVIDENCE OF AN ARTIST’S LIFE – DAYS MADE EVEN BETTER WITH THESE HANDS OF MINE.
FOUR SENSES CARRY ME THROUGH THE HOURS FILLED WITH POSSIBILITY AND PROMISE AS I PRACTICE WHAT IT MEANS TO MAKE ART. MY EYES USED TO TELL ME DISTANCE, COLOR TEMPERATURE, AND ALL THE DETAILS I WOULD PREVIOUSLY OBSESS OVER. NOW I WALK THROUGH A BLUR OF FALLING LEAVES DANCING IN THE SUNLIGHT — TO THE COMMON EYE, A WORLD A CHAOS AND DISTRACTION. YET FOR ME, THE BEAUTY IS EVERYWHERE I LOOK.
ALL OF THIS WORK IS REPRESENTATIVE OF MY DESIRE TO SHOW WHAT I SEE… OR BETTER, TO IMAGINE THAT I SEE. THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHOW THE WORK IN PUBLIC IS A GIFT, AND I’M GRATEFUL FOR ALL THE EYES THAT WILL SEE MY JOURNEY INTO THE UNKNOWN. TOUCH, SMELL, HEARING AND TASTE HAVE INFORMED MY HANDS AND HEART WHILE I’M TEACHING MY MIND’S EYE TO BE THOUGHTFUL, PATIENT, AND IMAGINATIVE. IF I DO IT ENOUGH, I’LL LEARN A NEW WAY TO SEE WITH JUST THE FOUR SENSES THAT REMAIN.” - JIMMY ABEGG
