TRIALOGUE: THREE WOMEN ARTISTS AND 18 MOONS

by WE:.Three

Working under the collective title We:.Three, Nashville-based artists Sarah Dark, Jessica Eichman and Cary Gibson offer their third collaborative work. They offer these works as visual representations of conversations that happened over 18 months. Each lunar cycle, the pieces were passed amongst the three. The only rule: do what you want. Respond. Or not. As the pieces developed, a trialogue between their unique marks emerged.

The work was deemed complete when the trio, each and together, had nothing left to add, alter, or remove. This artistic call and response reflects the historic lineage of needlework as both solitary and communal. So too, the work harkens back to the use of threadwork for self-expression through archetypal symbolic or coded messages. The works are displayed without frame, and the messy shadow backside exposed for scrutiny, defy the expectations of perfection in stitchwork, or indeed one’s performance of womanhood (be she maiden, mother, or crone). This is a process-driven body of collaborative work. Every mark made concealed, uncovered, undone, can be traced. Nothing is hidden. Like much of the work that has been traditionally contributed by women, this series celebrates a practice that weaves us together in trust and relationship, and forms the very cloth of culture and community.
